Nigeria Foreign Exchange and Trade Finance: LC, Collection and Export Proceeds
Cross-border trade into Nigeria needs a payment structure that matches the buyer’s banking capacity, shipment documents and current foreign-exchange rules. The best option depends on counterparty risk, currency, transaction size and delivery terms.
This article is general trade information, not legal, tax, banking or customs advice. Nigerian rules and portal workflows can change. The importer/exporter must verify the current requirements with the relevant authority, authorised dealer bank and licensed customs agent before committing or dispatching cargo.
Understand the current FX framework
Nigeria’s foreign-exchange market and regulatory framework can change. Importers should confirm current access channels, eligible transactions, documentation and bank processing requirements directly with an authorised dealer bank. Avoid relying on unofficial market quotations or assuming that a Form M creates an automatic FX entitlement.
Letter of Credit
A documentary credit can reduce payment risk when the issuing bank and credit terms are acceptable to the seller. Review the issuing bank, confirmation requirement, expiry, latest shipment date, presentation period, required documents and discrepancy rules before accepting the LC.
Documentary collection
Documents against payment (D/P) or documents against acceptance (D/A) may be less costly than an LC but provide different levels of protection. Under collection, banks handle documents according to instructions; they do not provide the same independent payment undertaking as a compliant LC.
Advance payment and open account
Advance payment can protect the exporter but may be difficult for the buyer. Open-account terms expose the seller to buyer and country risk. Consider staged deposits, credit insurance, bank references, trade references and shipment limits before offering deferred payment.
Manage FX exposure and proceeds
Agree the invoice currency and payment milestones in the contract. Define who bears bank charges, intermediary fees and exchange-rate movement. Nigerian exporters should follow current NXP and export-proceeds repatriation requirements and retain bank evidence; Indian exporters should separately comply with Indian export and foreign-exchange rules.
Practical checklist before shipment
- Confirm the correct HS code, product description, origin and applicable tariff.
- Check current permits, product registration and conformity certificates before loading.
- Match invoice, packing list, transport document, origin evidence and bank/portal records.
- Ask the Nigerian importer and licensed customs agent to confirm the live clearance workflow.
Frequently asked questions
Does Form M guarantee FX allocation?
No. Form M is an import documentation record and does not guarantee foreign-currency availability.
Is an LC always safer than collection?
A properly issued and compliant LC can provide a bank payment undertaking, while documentary collection does not provide the same guarantee.
Should a seller accept payment into an unrelated account?
No. Verify beneficiary identity, bank instructions and applicable foreign-exchange compliance before accepting payment.
